Hello Gang,
As you know, surfing is a sport that requires the use of accessories to practice safely and comfortably. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, it is important to choose your accessories carefully to avoid injuries and fully enjoy your surf session.
In this article, we will explore the various surfing accessories that have become essential for surfers.
The surf leash
The leash is an accessory that connects the surfer to the board and allows them to maintain some control in case of a fall. In the early days of surfing, surfers had to swim to their boards, which were usually brought back to shore, if they fell.
The leash democratized surfing by making it accessible to everyone. It was invented by the Frenchman George Hennebutte in 1958, but it was the American Pat O'Neill who claimed to have invented the leash in 1971.
Surfboard wax
Surf wax is a product specifically designed for surfing, composed of wax, paraffin, and resin. It is used on the top of the board to make it non-slip.
Zogs Sex Wax is the most famous wax in the world since its creation in the 1970s by Mr. Herzog. It is offered in different scents, such as strawberry, vanilla and coconut, but be careful not to bite into it.
Surfboard grip
Grip tape is an accessory that replaces wax on the back of a surfboard. It provides better grip for the back foot and also serves as a marker and protection against impacts on the board. It is adhesive and once applied, it cannot be moved.
It was invented by Tom Morey, also the inventor of the bodyboard and fins, in the 1970s. Herbie Fletcher, with his company Astrodeck, marketed it worldwide.
They come in all shapes and sizes, all you have to do is choose yours.
Surfboard drifts
Fins are accessories used to stabilize and improve the maneuverability of the board. They are located at the lower rear of the board.
There are three types of boards: boards with 3 fins (one central and two lateral) which are called thrusters, boards with two external fins called "twin", and boards with a single central fin called "single".
The thruster was invented by Simon Anderson, an Australian surfer, in 1981. It's the most versatile and easiest board to surf. Today you can find boards with 4 or 5 convertible fins, but nothing beats the thruster if you're looking for a high-performance board!
At Gang Surf, we favour soft fins to avoid injuries when handling fins.
In conclusion, accessories are essential for surfing, whether you're a beginner or an experienced surfer. At Gang Surf, we offer a wide range of accessories to help you enjoy your surfing. surfing lessons in Biscarrosse, safely!
