Tides play a crucial role on the beaches of Biscarrosse, influencing surfing conditions and creating rip currents. Understanding the impact of tides is essential to ensure you fully enjoy your surf session on the beautiful Atlantic beaches of Biscarrosse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tides in surfing <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The tide is a natural phenomenon resulting from the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon, the Sun, and the Earth's rotation. On the beaches of Biscarrosse, this complete cycle lasts approximately 12 hours, 25 minutes, and 28 seconds, with a 40-minute shift each day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tides are measured using a unitless coefficient representing the tidal range. This coefficient indicates the difference in height between successive high and low tides. Once the tide reaches its highest or lowest point, it remains stable for a few minutes before changing direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrary to popular belief, spring tides are not directly related to wave size. However, they play a crucial role in wave breaking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring tides are characterized by greater water movement, resulting in rapid changes in depth at the peak of the waves. Surfers must therefore carefully observe these changes in conditions and adapt accordingly. Conversely, spring tides result in less water movement, offering relative depth stability and making it easier to analyze wave characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For learning to surf, it's best to avoid the two hours before and after high tide. It's also not recommended to surf on an unfamiliar reef during the outgoing tide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rip currents in surfing <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tidal movements along the Atlantic coast create rip currents. A rip current is a small pool formed by the sand. These are large holes that empty and fill, generating currents that are particularly dangerous for swimmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At low tide, a rip current forms a hollow in the beach where a small amount of water can accumulate while most of the beach remains dry. Conversely, at high tide, a rip current appears as an area of calm water where waves do not break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For beginners, it's recommended to progress in areas where you can touch the bottom, such as a sandbar. To avoid getting caught in a rip current, it's important to choose a fixed landmark on the beach and exit the water in front of it. This way, you can be sure you'll never end up in a rip current. For more experienced surfers, the rip current can be used as a kind of elevator to move out to sea and more easily reach the peak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At each access point to the regulated beaches of Biscarrosse, you will find signs updated by the lifeguards (MNS) providing information on tides and the presence of rip currents.
